Since I have been in love with painters like Edward Hopper, Rockwell Kent, the Wyeths and others who worked here on the eastern Atlantic coast of the US, and frequented places like Cape Cod, the Maine Coast and Monhegan Island, I have always been fascinated by the light here. When my daughter decided to go to art school at NSCAD University, in Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada), to study art and film, I decided to tag along to see the light on this Island that sticks way out in the Northeast Atlantic ocean. We got here on New Years Day. Immediately I could see the difference. It was like stepping out of black and white into Oz. Even the houses are painted bright colors. The light is like nothing I have ever seen before even on Cape Cod. Like a kaleidoscope, it bounces off the buildings, the snow and glows in the sky, especially at sunrise and sunset, and the twilight sky is the the most brilliant periwinkle blue one can imagine, if one can even imagine this color. Trying to capture this in paint is both frustrating and joyful. I feel like I should be using crayons instead of paint! More to come, as I still haven’t made it out of the city!
